Colorado’s bullpen depth takes a hit as Petit awaits further evaluation

Colorado Rockies reliever RJ Petit is out indefinitely after sustaining a sprained ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow, the team announced this week. The 26-year-old will undergo additional testing to determine the appropriate treatment. His return timeline remains uncertain as the Rockies progress through the season.

Petit was selected by Colorado in the Rule 5 draft this past offseason. He was aiming to make his major league debut following a strong minor league performance. Originally drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 14th round of the 2021 amateur draft, Petit became a reliable option in the minors. In 2023, splitting time between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo, Petit recorded a 10-2 record with a 2.44 ERA and 79 strikeouts over 66 1/3 innings. These results drew the attention of the Rockies’ front office, who viewed Petit as a potential bullpen asset.

Over five minor league seasons, Petit has a 21-15 record with a 3.40 ERA and 14 saves. He has consistently performed in high-leverage situations. Despite his minor league success, he has not yet appeared in a major league game. That debut will be delayed as he recovers from his elbow injury.

Petit’s injury impacts a Rockies bullpen seeking stability. Meanwhile, attention around the Mariners has also focused on the recent Raleigh handshake incident during a World Baseball Classic matchup. Colorado is working to improve its position in the National League West, relying on a combination of veterans and young pitchers. Around the league, other teams have been celebrating major milestones, including Mariners AL West success following Seattle’s division-clinching season. The loss of Petit, who was expected to provide depth and potentially fill a late-inning role, increases the workload for the remaining relievers. The Rockies now face a challenging stretch of games.

Petit’s focus will shift to recovery. Sprained UCL injuries can vary in severity, and the results of his upcoming tests will determine whether rest, rehabilitation, or a more aggressive treatment plan is required. The Rockies have not provided a timetable for his return and state that his recovery will follow medical guidance.

As the Rockies continue their season, they will adjust their bullpen strategy while awaiting further updates on Petit’s status. Seattle, meanwhile, is evaluating its own pitching depth as Mariners roster cuts continue during spring camp. The team’s ability to adapt will be important as they compete in the division. Petit’s major league debut is on hold.

Petit and the Rockies await further updates as he begins his recovery process.
