Mariners balance WBC absences and prospect development as roster decisions loom.

The Seattle Mariners are preparing for another round of roster cuts by the end of this week, with several key players still away at the World Baseball Classic (WBC). Former Mariners catcher and current team staffer Dan Wilson reported that the club aims to provide prospects with increased playing time as minor league spring games begin next week. The team is also narrowing its focus on finalizing the 26-man roster for Opening Day.

This year’s camp presents added challenges with multiple Mariners participating in the WBC. Despite these absences, the front office continues to make roster decisions, prioritizing game experience for younger players ahead of the minor league season. The cuts are intended to manage roster size and ensure the coaching staff can evaluate emerging talent.

Mitch Garver is taking on a larger role in the absence of regular catcher Cal Raleigh. Raleigh has also drawn attention during the World Baseball Classic following the widely discussed Raleigh handshake incident. Recently signed to a minor league deal, Garver is helping maintain stability with the pitching staff while Raleigh represents the Mariners internationally. Garver’s experience and familiarity with the organization have been valuable as pitchers and catchers build chemistry before the regular season. Raleigh’s value to Seattle has been clear for some time, especially during Raleigh’s 60-homer season that helped power the Mariners to a division title.

Top pitching prospect Kade Anderson is making the most of his spring training opportunities. Anderson started a Cactus League game against the Texas Rangers on March 6, demonstrating the potential that has made him a notable prospect in the Mariners’ system. Earlier in the spring, Anderson faced the San Diego Padres on February 28, recording three strikeouts, one walk, and allowing two earned runs on three hits in a single inning. Performances like these are important for young players seeking to make an impression as roster decisions approach.

The Mariners’ approach this spring reflects a broader trend across Major League Baseball, as teams balance evaluating prospects with roster construction and international commitments. Across the league, pitching depth has also been tested by injuries, including the recent Petit UCL injury that sidelined the Rockies reliever indefinitely. With the minor league season approaching, Seattle’s coaching staff must decide which players will join the major league club and which will continue their development in the minors.

Further clarity on the Mariners’ roster is expected as the week progresses, with additional cuts likely before minor league games begin. For prospects like Anderson and veterans like Garver, each inning and at-bat is an opportunity to demonstrate their value and compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster.

The Mariners will continue their Cactus League schedule as they work toward finalizing the roster for the regular season. Roster spots remain contested, and the coming days will be significant for both players and coaches.
