Former Dolphins and Eagles edge rusher Jaelan Phillips inks $120 million deal; linebacker Devin Lloyd joins from Jacksonville

The Carolina Panthers have strengthened their defense with the signings of edge rusher Jaelan Phillips and linebacker Devin Lloyd. These acquisitions address key defensive needs ahead of the upcoming season.

Phillips, regarded as one of the league’s top pass rushers, joins the Panthers on a four-year, $120 million contract. His recent performance with Philadelphia drew attention following the impressive Phillips Eagles debut against Green Bay. The 25-year-old previously played for the Miami Dolphins and the Philadelphia Eagles. His tenure in Philadelphia was noted for improving the Eagles’ defensive performance. Phillips is recognized for his quick first step and consistent pressure, and is expected to enhance the Panthers’ front seven.

Linebacker Devin Lloyd arrives in Carolina after four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Lloyd’s contract is valued at $45 million over three years, with $25 million guaranteed at signing. In Jacksonville, Lloyd established himself as a dependable tackler and a developing leader on defense. His range and ability to contribute in both run defense and pass coverage add depth to the Panthers’ linebacker unit.

The signings come as the Panthers seek to address defensive struggles from recent seasons. Other teams are also reinforcing their defensive lines this offseason, including the recent Hargrave Packers deal in Green Bay. Last year, Carolina’s defense struggled to generate pressure and create turnovers, contributing to a disappointing finish in the NFC South. The additions of Phillips and Lloyd are intended to improve defensive performance and stability.

Phillips’ contract ranks among the league’s highest for edge rushers, with an average annual salary expected to fall between those of Josh Hines-Allen and Nick Bosa. This reflects Carolina's expectations for his impact. Phillips is expected to provide immediate production and long-term stability for a defense that has lost key players in recent years.

Lloyd’s arrival adds experience and versatility to a linebacker group that has lacked consistency. His ability to play multiple roles offers flexibility for the defensive coordinator in both scheme and personnel decisions.

These signings are part of a broader effort by the Panthers’ front office to reshape the roster and compete in a division that remains open. Meanwhile, Philadelphia has been adjusting its secondary following the Alexander Eagles exit that resulted in a cap credit for the team. With the NFL Draft and training camp approaching, Carolina is investing in established talent to accelerate its rebuild.

The integration of Phillips and Lloyd into the Panthers’ system will be closely monitored as the team prepares for a challenging schedule and seeks to return to playoff contention.
