Packers Land DT Javon Hargrave on Two-Year, $23 Million Deal

Former Pro Bowler reunites with defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon in Green Bay
The Green Bay Packers have signed defensive tackle Javon Hargrave to a two-year, $23 million contract, including $13 million in the first year. Hargrave adds a proven interior presence to a Packers defense undergoing changes following key departures.
Hargrave, 33, joins Green Bay after the 2025 season with the Minnesota Vikings, where he recorded 52 tackles and 3.5 sacks. His career includes time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, and San Francisco 49ers.The Eagles have also been managing roster adjustments following the recent Alexander Eagles exit from the team. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2023. Hargrave’s most productive seasons came in Philadelphia under current Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, where he totaled 18.5 sacks over two years. Philadelphia’s defense has continued to attract attention recently following the impressive Phillips Eagles debut against Green Bay.
The Packers’ need at nose tackle increased after the departures of Kenny Clark and Colby Wooden. Hargrave is expected to fill that role, providing stability and veteran leadership to a defensive line experiencing significant turnover. His familiarity with Gannon’s schemes is expected to support his transition.
Hargrave missed much of the 2024 season with a torn triceps muscle. The Packers are relying on his full recovery and a return to Pro Bowl form. If healthy, Hargrave’s ability to collapse the pocket and stop the run could address a defense that struggled to control the line of scrimmage last season.
Because Hargrave was released by the Vikings rather than departing in free agency, his signing is not expected to impact Green Bay’s compensatory draft picks in 2027. This allows the team to address a key need without affecting future draft capital.
Hargrave’s contract structure provides the Packers with flexibility. With $13 million due in the first year, the second year is reported to function as a team option, allowing Green Bay to reassess after the 2026 season.
Hargrave is expected to start at nose tackle when the Packers open training camp later this summer. His presence is set to anchor a defensive line featuring both young players and veterans. Green Bay is relying on Hargrave’s addition to maintain competitiveness in the NFC North.
Hargrave’s signing reflects the Packers' commitment to strengthening their defense. Around the league, teams have also invested heavily in pass rushers such as the Phillips Panthers deal in Carolina. As the offseason continues, focus will remain on Hargrave’s integration and impact in Green Bay.
