Vikings’ defensive backs coach reportedly heading to Washington after strong seasons in Minnesota

If NFL insider Ian Rapoport’s sources are to be believed—and let’s be honest, the man’s track record is pretty solid—Minnesota Vikings defensive backs coach Daronte Jones is packing his bags. Word on the street is he’s heading east to become the Washington Commanders’ new defensive coordinator. Now, before you start ordering your custom Commanders jersey with “Jones” on the back, keep in mind that neither team has made it official just yet. But league insiders are buzzing that Jones is expected to take the reins in Washington. Minnesota’s profile is also rising overseas, with the Vikings set to feature in a major Dublin game later this season.

Jones has been a familiar face in Minnesota since 2022, returning to a role he first held back in 2020. During his time with the Vikings, he didn’t just keep the secondary afloat—he helped them soar. In the 2022 season, the Vikings’ defensive backs finished third in the NFL in passes defended with 87 and tied for tenth in interceptions with 15. Veteran safety Harrison Smith, who’s seen more footballs than a sporting goods store, matched his career best that year with five interceptions. Not too shabby for a guy who’s been around the block.

Fast forward to 2024, and Byron Murphy Jr. decided it was his time to shine, earning his first career Pro Bowl selection and reportedly snagging a career-high six interceptions. The Vikings’ defense, according to reports, didn’t just show up—they showed out, leading the league in interceptions with 24, passes defended with 95, and tying for the league lead in takeaways with 33. Now, the official league stats are still being tallied, but if these numbers hold, Jones’ resume just got a serious upgrade. High-profile venues are also in the spotlight, with Croke Park preparing to host major cup finals in early 2026.

It’s not just Washington that’s been eyeing Jones, either. He recently interviewed for defensive coordinator gigs with the Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, New York Jets, and New York Giants. Clearly, when it comes to defensive minds, Jones is the belle of the NFL ball right now. Coaching changes are spreading across the league, including in Pittsburgh with the arrival of a new coach to lead the Steelers.

Jonathan Harrison, sports writer and radio host, contributed to this report. For more updates on NFL coaching moves, keep your eyes glued to Sports Illustrated and your favorite sports outlets—because in the NFL, the only constant is change (and maybe a little drama).
