Patriots Add Linebacker Patrick Johnson and Receiver Trent Sherfield Sr. to Practice Squad

Both players bring NFL experience and depth to New England’s roster.
The New England Patriots have just rolled out the welcome mat for linebacker Patrick Johnson and wide receiver Trent Sherfield Sr., signing both to their practice squad. It’s like adding a couple of seasoned chess pieces to the board—never a bad move when you’re eyeing a winning strategy. The move follows a commanding Giants win that underscored the team’s momentum.
Patrick Johnson, age 28, was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He’s no stranger to the NFL grind, having suited up for both the Eagles and the New York Giants. With 70 games under his belt and 2 starts, Johnson has chalked up 26 tackles, 1 sack, and 15 special teams tackles. Not to mention, he was part of the Eagles’ roster during their Super Bowl LVII run—talk about having a front-row seat to the big show!
Trent Sherfield Sr., age 29, joins the Patriots’ practice squad as a wide receiver entering his eighth NFL season. If you’re counting, that’s a lot of playbooks and a lot of locker rooms—Arizona, San Francisco, Miami, Buffalo, Minnesota, and Denver have all been stamped on his NFL passport. Sherfield entered the league as a rookie free agent with Arizona in 2018 and has appeared in 124 NFL games with 14 starts, hauling in 89 receptions for 1,034 yards and 6 touchdowns. He’s the kind of player who knows how to find the end zone—and probably the best coffee spot in every NFL city.
Johnson and Sherfield Sr. bring a healthy dose of depth and experience to the Patriots’ practice squad. Added depth could prove vital as New England manages the ongoing Maye injury ahead of the Super Bowl. Whether they’ll make the leap to the active roster is still up in the air, but one thing’s for sure: the Patriots just got a little stronger in the wings. Stay tuned—football, like life, is full of surprises. Coaching changes are also underway in New York, where the Giants are searching for a new coordinator to reshape their offense.
