Jackie Robinson and Shohei Ohtani Rookie Cards Lead REA’s January Auction at $24,600 Each

Auction features strong results for classic and modern sports cards
Talk about a home run! Jackie Robinson and Shohei Ohtani rookie cards stole the show at REA’s January auction, each hammering down at a cool $24,600. The Jackie Robinson card—a 1948-1949 Leaf #79 graded SGC EX+ 5.5—stood shoulder to shoulder with the Shohei Ohtani 2018 Topps Chrome Rookie Autograph #RA-SO, graded PSA 10, as the modern-day superstar continues to command the Ohtani spotlight. These two heavy hitters were the top sellers of the event, proving that legends—both old-school and new—still know how to draw a crowd (and open wallets).
The auction was no one-trick pony, either. It showcased a parade of impressive results, underscoring the enduring appeal of both vintage treasures and modern marvels. A 1911 M110 Sporting Life Cabinet Honus Wagner card (PSA GOOD 2, MK) raked in $19,680—no small potatoes for a card that’s been around longer than sliced bread. Mickey Mantle’s 1951 Bowman #253 rookie card (PSA EX 5, MC) found a new home for $15,990, while a 1933 R319 Goudey #92 Lou Gehrig card (SGC 5) brought in $14,145. Not to be outdone, a 1969 Topps #533 Nolan Ryan card (PSA 9) clocked in at $12,300, and Willie Mays’ 1971 Topps #600 (SGC MINT 9) fetched $11,377.50—proving that cardboard can be worth its weight in gold (well, almost).
The modern card market wasn’t just sitting on the bench, either— fueled by unforgettable postseason moments like the Judge homer that electrified the ALCS. A 1986-1987 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card (PSA 8) soared to $11,685, reminding us all that His Airness still has plenty of lift. A 2008-2009 Topps Chrome Orange Refractor LeBron James (PSA 10) reached $11,070, while another Jackie Robinson 1948-1949 Leaf #79 rookie card, this one graded SGC VG 3, matched that price— as today’s stars prepare for headline moves like the looming Bellinger deal. Not to be left out, a 2000 Bowman Football #236 Tom Brady rookie card (PSA 10) also scored $11,070—because apparently, greatness comes in pairs.
REA President Brian Dwyer tipped his cap to the strong start to 2026 for the cards and collectibles market. If this auction is any indication, collectors are in for an exciting ride. The company’s next auction is set for February 12 through February 22, so mark your calendars—because you never know when lightning will strike twice.
