Boston picks up three-time All-Star first baseman and $8 million in latest trade with St. Louis

Hold onto your hats, Red Sox Nation—Boston is making waves again! The Red Sox are reeling in three-time All-Star first baseman Willson Contreras, along with some extra cash, from the St. Louis Cardinals, according to a Reuters report. If you thought the hot stove was cooling down, think again. The move adds another layer of intrigue to the rivalry, especially with the teams meeting in Yankees vs Red Sox Wild Card Game 2 at Yankee Stadium.

In return, the Cardinals will scoop up right-handed pitcher Hunter Dobbins and pitching prospects Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita. And here’s the cherry on top: St. Louis is also sending $8 million to help Boston shoulder part of Contreras’ remaining $42.5 million contract. (Let’s face it, even in baseball, a little help with the rent never hurts.) Contreras is set to earn $18 million in 2026 and $18.5 million in 2027—talk about a payday! Beyond the immediate transaction, the deal highlights how Contreras fits Boston’s long-term plans as the organization reshapes its roster.

Contreras, 31, is no stranger to the spotlight. Last season, he suited up for 135 games, batting .257 with 20 home runs and 80 RBIs. Over his career with the Chicago Cubs from 2016 to 2022 and the Cardinals, Contreras has put up a .258 batting average, 172 home runs, and 548 RBIs in 1,078 games. That’s a stat line you’d want on your fantasy team—or, if you’re Boston, your real one.

Hunter Dobbins, 26, was cruising with a 4-1 record and a 4.13 ERA in 13 appearances last season before a torn ACL threw him a curveball. Yhoiker Fajardo, just 19, posted a 1-4 record and a sparkling 2.25 ERA over 72 innings in the Florida Complex League and Low-A Salem. Meanwhile, Blake Aita, 22, wrapped up last season with a 5-7 record and a 3.98 ERA in 23 games across Single-A and High-A. These young arms are hoping to make their mark in St. Louis—talk about a fresh start!

This marks the second recent handshake between Boston and St. Louis. Just last month, pitcher Sonny Gray waived his no-trade clause and packed his bags for Boston on November 25. Apparently, these two teams just can’t stay away from each other. Just last month, pitcher Sonny Gray waived his no-trade clause and joined Boston, a move that directly affects the club’s 2026 pitching outlook.

With Contreras donning a Boston jersey and a trio of prospects heading to St. Louis, both teams are clearly shuffling the deck for the upcoming season. Buckle up—spring training can’t come soon enough.
